Dear friends,

We only have few days left until the first word will be spoke at eLiberatica.We have managed to finalize the schedule.

Please note, the guest registrations will begin at 8.00 on Friday 18th May at Aro Palace Hotel, Brasov. Please try to register on time, it is important to stick to the schedule.

You will be a part of, we hope, the best event in IT in Romania this year. For those who didn't yet bought a ticket, the registration can be made at Brasov, from 8.00-8:30 on Friday.

For us, this is it. We will publish opinions, photos and stories from there to our website after the conference.

Only a month until the conference

Dear friends,

As you might have noticed, under the Sessions and Workshops section ,we have listed the subjects that our keynote speakers will cover in their presentations at eLiberatica. You will notice that we decided that a part of the keynote speakers to give two speeches each.
We hope you will be as much enchanted as we are of their availability of discussing with the audience, so that every question you might have to find answers.

We also remind you that until the 1^st of May you can register for199 euro, afterwards the price being 249 euros for the BCT (Basic Conference Ticket).

We are waiting for your questions regarding the conference.

We hope everyone of you will be present at Brasov in the 18^th and 19^th of May, there will surely be moments we will all remember.

eLiberatica - bilingual and ePayment facilities

Starting this month, you can pay for your participation at the eLiberatica conference by debit or credit card, thanks to the electronic payment system setup by the ePayment company.

In addition, you can benefit from major discounts on your conference ticket(s) by registering and paying for your options before the end of February. Up until February 28th, you are able to take advantage of a 100 Euro discount for Basic Conference Tickets, paying only 149 instead of the standard 249 Euro price. At the same time students and teachers in the pre-university and university system can benefit from Discounted Conference Tickets ( 25 Euro ) by sending their application and proving appropriate documentation.

Soon, we are going to release our offer for mass-media partners. We are hoping to have complete information coverage for the public and this is a crucial step in that direction. Other News

Beside ePayment, another big accomplishment is the release of the English website version.

In the top right corner, you will find a small flag and a link, which provide you access to the Romanian and English versions, as needed. A big effort was spent to implement bilingual services for the website, but the reward will be a powerful presence on the web promoting eLiberatica inside and outside Romania.

The release of the website and speakers confirmation

Starting today, www.eLiberatica.ro is almost complete. The last thing remaining is that you should start to communicate with us!

After around 5689 hours since the first official communication about the eLiberatica project, 3646 hours since we decided to work together, 830 emails changed, few operative meetings, some discussions on Yahoo Messenger, numberless tables with figures, some extinguished brain cells and few more extra wrinkles (for who’s counting), eLiberatica is since today a living reality.

Regarding the launch of this instrument of communication, we, the ones who built it, can only say that is very close to what we wish from all the surrounding things: it looks good, it works well, it doesn’t communicate excessively but it communicates enough, it has diversity, is full, and is colorful. We are waiting for the public voice to tell us it should have been developed vertically, is not dynamically enough, the news must have been published in the right side, the pictures were supposed to be straight and not half profile, PHP always comes before MySQL … or the other way around

All these will be pretexts for us to communicate what we already know: we can’t exist unless we can be criticized; the essential condition to move forward is for you to see us and give us objective feedbacks.

We are waiting for all of you to visit us and write us what you believe about both eLiberatica project as well as about this first institutionalized manifestation of the initiative… to tell us what is good about them and especially what are bad.

We are going to be here, on www.eLiberatica.ro and we’ll be glad to communicate with you!

Below you can find the speakers which confirmed their presence to eLiberatica:

Rasmus Lerdorf – The creator of PHP, language used in over 22 millions websites.
Monty Widenius – The main architect and supervisor of MySQL, most popular open source DBMS.
Brian Behlendorf – One of Apache Project founders, the server that host more than 60% of the web.
Zak Greant – The evangelist who will represent Mozilla (no more words here).
Jim Willis (Director of eGovernment and IT, Rhode Island, SUA) – the promoter of OS/FS in the US public administration.
Aleksander Farstad – Founder and CEO of eZ systems (the company developing one of the most important enterprise open source CMS: eZ publish).
Kurt von Finck – He comes as a representative for GNOME and those developing Ubuntu.

The last steps before eLiberatica full website release

Despite the fact that maybe in the last few months the external activity might not be noticeable, in the background, things moved with intensity.

Few public events can be mentioned although:

One of the most important events is " LOAD - Linux Open Alternative Days", which took place in Bucharest, 17^th-18t^th of October and where eLiberatica was presented by Alexandru Lăpuşan, another ROSI member. In the same month, eLiberatica was mentioned at " Linux Innovation" in Arad and "Studenţiada" in Iaşi by Dan Mutescu (also a ROSI member).

Another event, this time in Bulgaria, was "OpenFest" where eLiberatica was presented by Bogomil Shopov. We wish to highlight the remarkable support – every since the beginning of the initiative – offered by both Bulgarian FLOSS movement representatives Yovko Lambrev and Bogomil Shopov.

The last event, chronologically, is another initiative that belongs to Filip Cherecheş-Tosa, who presented eLiberatica at the third edition of "GeekMeet".

As about the background work, maybe the greatest achievement was the ability to attract some of the most remarkable personalities in the IT arena and OS/FS movement to join and speak at the conference. Since we plan to make this a surprise for you – next month, along with the official website launch – we won't yet make the list public, not yet. Anyway, we want to thank especially Zak Greant since without his help, most probably, we would have not been able to gather so many personalities to attend eLiberatica.

The eLiberatica website is on its last 100 yards; it was quite a work to be done but thanks to the effort of: Lucian Savluc, Adrian Florea, Gabriela Bartic, Mircea Sârbu, the Agora Media team and others who helped, it is ready to be officially launched. We need to mention here the help of Roberto Gerola, to whom we thank, who provided the multilingual support on Drupal (CMS used for eLiberatica website) using Localizer, a module developed by himself.

Currently the last corrections are made, the official launch of the website being estimated sometime around December 18^th 2006.

The first public appearances

The month of August brought important achievements; eLiberatica manifesto was published, same with the ROSI presentation page. Agora Media published the first news about the initiative.

For the first time, eLiberatica was presented to a public IT&C international event: BarCamp – organized in Vancouver, Canada, between 25^th and 27^th of August. Lucian Savluc and Zak Greant presented the initiative and its objectives to some of the most active members of Vancouver IT community. More than 50 flyers were distributed and feedback from the public was positive and enthusiast. Among the ones let know about our project we can count Bruce Byfield who published information about the initiative in the famous portal NewsForge.

In the same time, eLiberatica starts to reflect itself in the blogosphere; here we need to mention some ROSI members who published on their blogs news and info about the event: Carmen Holotescu, Alex Brie, Aurelian Oancea, Filip Cherecheş-Tosa, Gabriel Radic, Sabin-Corneliu Buraga, Yovko Lambrev, Zak Greant, Andrei Maxim, Alex Nedelcu, Leontin Bîrsan, Ciprian Popovici, Mihai Gheza. Besides them, the news spread among other blogers and OS/FS fans.

As for September, eLiberatica went public for the first time in Romania, being presented by Carmen Holotescu and Sabin Buraga at "Seminarul Linux şi medii virtuale de învăţare UVVG Arad" conference.

Meanwhile, the work on eLiberatica website continues; a test server was set, the structure was established, Drupal was the chosen CMS; the layout and content are under continuous development.

New members joined the ROSI initiative group as a result of eLiberatica related publicity.

eLiberatica and ROSI – the official logos

Both eLiberatica and ROSI have official logos!

All ROSI members brought their contribution to these ideas, but those who proved their artistic skills were Mircea Drăgoi with an excellent eLiberatica logo and Ionuţ Popa – one of the youngest members – with ROSI logo.
Another achieving this month was the purchase of rosi.ro and eliberatica.ro .com and .net domains as well as establishing the next steps in eLiberatica organizing process, the most important one being publishing a manifesto page on eLiberatica.ro and a presentation page on rosi.ro website.

Also, Agora started the work on editing an official partnership document; document witch will stipulate the creation of an ONG as soon as the conference will take place

Agora Media – the official ROSI partner for eLiberatica

In May 2006, for the first time, some of the ROSI members (Ştefan Petre, Adrian Florea, Laurenţiu Fogoroş, Leontin Bîrsan, Ciprian Alexandru and Lucian Savluc – who was in Romania for the whole month) met in Braşov and talked about future steps.

The need to attract new members, to involve companies from the country in the process and especially the necessity to find a strong, trustful partner were also brought into discussion.
After a carefully analyzing the possible options, with the help of another ROSI member (Mircea Sârbu) we were able to establish a meeting with Mr. Romulus Maier, the general manager of Agora Media.
The general feeling was that both ROSI and Agora share the same ideals: the willingness to promote new IT&C technologies and positive trends in Romania, building a connection between the Romanian IT community and the world one.

Given so, it was decided that ROSI and Agora will work together like partners to organize eLiberatica conference.

"We [the ROSI members] have the feeling that this partnership is the biggest step forward and even if some of us had doubts about this initiative, now we are sure not only eLiberatica will take place but also is going to have a huge success too."

ROSI and eLiberatica

After careful consideration, we have decided to use "ROSI" as name for the movement.
We wanted that both Open Source and Free Software trends to be part of the name that came out as an abbreviation for "Romanian Open Source and Free Software Initiative" so we choose to use the shorthand of ROS(FS)I.

We also decided that " eLiberatica – The Benefits of Open & Free Technologies" will be the name of the conference. Proposed topics for the conference were subject of debate; the name is considered to be a good exponent for the essence of the event.

We pointed out the conference objectives:

To reveal the general Open Source and Free Software concepts, the differences between the two trends and the types of licenses used in this area.
To demonstrate that Open Source and Free Software is a valid alternative to proprietary software.
To present the possibilities to use and develop Open Source and Free Software in Romania.
To present various business models based on OS/FS and the way they can be implemented by Romanian entrepreneurs.
To determine the local and governmental authorities to consider the usage of OS/FS in public administration and civic coordination as a viable and strong option.
To lead toward the creation of an OS/FS community in Romania, strongly connected to the global FLOSS movement.

In the same time, we have identified the target market for Eliberatica:

Entrepreneurs, decision factors from companies and freelancers.
Decision factors involved in the local and governmental administration and non-governmental representatives.
Programmers, developers, web designers, system engineers, project managers and everyone else working in IT.
Students and teachers, regardless of their study domain.
Everyone from Mass Media.
Computer users in general. (We are strongly convinced that anybody who is using or is going to use a computer, will find useful and interesting information attending this conference.)
